Panel to discuss open government and access to public records in advance of Sunshine Week

With "Sunshine Week" coming up March 14-20, AMP has pulled together a panel packed with perspectives on freedom of speech and access to information. Former AMP president Donna Francavilla will be the moderator at the event on March 11, beginning at 11:30 a.m. CT. Francavilla has worked for many years as a broadcast journalist and is owner of the PR firm Frankly Speaking Communications.

Panelists include: National Federation of Press Women President Gwen Larson, who worked at the Emporia Gazette in Kansas for 17 years, progressing from a reporter to executive editor, and is now director of media relations for Emporia State University; Jacquelyn Carlisle, former news editor of the Tuskegee News and now a technical writer in the College of Agriculture, Environmental and Nutritional Sciences at Tuskegee University; Vickii Howell, a former writer at The Birmingham News who founded the Birmingham View before moving to Mobile, where she is president/CEO at M.O.V.E. Gulf Coast Community Development Corporation; and Steve Stewart, now retired, who worked as a reporter for The Atlanta Constitution, editor and publisher of The Monroe Journal, managing editor and Internet news supervisor for The Decatur Daily and assistant professor of journalism at Troy University. In Monroeville, his newspaper successfully sued Conecuh-Monroe Counties Gas District for access to its board meetings and records.
